Release

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort has been out on Switch 2 since 22 October, and it is one of the most talked-about games on X this week. The new motion party game packs 12 sports, brings back Wuhu Island from the Wii era and costs $49.99 as a digital download in the US. Critics are far kinder to it than they were to Switch Sports in 2022, but there are catches around online play, extra controllers and language support. Key facts at a glance

  • 12 sports in total: eight classic motion sports, the new Thumb Wrestling, and three Leisure Sports (Prop Plane, Skateboarding and Power Cruising) set on a rebuilt Wuhu Island.
  • Reviews are strong: Nintendo Life gave it 9/10, Game Informer 8/10, and Metacritic showed a score of 79 from 62 critic reviews when we checked on 26 October.
  • Online play needs a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, the download is 10.3 GB, and Arabic is not among the 13 supported languages.

Why Switch Sports Resort is trending

The game's name took off on X as soon as reviews landed. Using X's post-count tool, we counted under 1,000 posts a day mentioning "Switch Sports Resort" on 19 and 20 October, then 5,294 on 21 October, 8,810 on 22 October (launch day) and still more than 4,600 on 25 October. That is over 30,000 posts in a week, which is a lot for a family sports game rather than a big-budget blockbuster. X's own news panel also ran stories about the launch and about Nintendo sharing a timeline of the Wii Sports series.

The buzz makes sense. The Verge noted that the game arrives squeezed between two other big Nintendo releases, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and the Ocarina of Time remake, and argued that it is exactly the kind of perennial seller the Switch 2 needs. Motion sports games are the ones families pull out at holidays and birthdays, long after launch week.

What is in the game: all 12 sports

Nintendo lists Tennis, Table Tennis, Golf, Boxing, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball and Archery as the main motion sports. Each one uses the Joy-Con 2 as something different: a racket, a paddle, a club or a bow. GameSpot points out that the console's HD Rumble makes Archery feel like you are pulling a real bowstring, and Boxing now has a stamina gauge, so wild non-stop punching is less effective than before.

The two genuinely new sports

Nintendo calls Thumb Wrestling and Skateboarding the new arrivals. In Thumb Wrestling you tilt the controller to pin your rival's thumb for three seconds, and you can spend time powering up your thumb to make the pin easier. Skateboarding is the cleverest idea in the package: you slide a Joy-Con 2 across a table in its mouse mode to kick-push your board around the island. Nintendo Life called Thumb Wrestling the game's biggest surprise, and TechRadar said it somehow makes thumb wrestling feel thrilling.

Leisure Sports and Wuhu Island

Prop Plane, Skateboarding and Power Cruising form a new Leisure Sports group. You hold the controller like a paper plane to fly, or grip two Joy-Con like Jet Ski handlebars and twist the right one to boost. Each has a five-minute Sightseeing Tour for exploring Wuhu Island and hunting collectible photos, plus races and balloon battles. The Verge compared the free-roaming feel to Mario Kart World.

What was left out

Not every past favourite made the cut. Chambara, Badminton and Football, all part of Switch Sports, are missing, and GameSpot also listed Disc Golf among the absent events. TechRadar said it wished Football and Chambara had been there at launch.

How it compares with Switch Sports and Wii Sports Resort

This is the fifth game in a series that started with Wii Sports in 2006. Wii Sports Resort followed in 2009, introduced Wuhu Island, required the Wii MotionPlus add-on and went on to sell more than 33 million copies. Nintendo Switch Sports launched in April 2022 with only six sports and was widely called thin, adding Golf later in 2022 and Basketball in 2024. Even so, it sold 18.32 million copies by March 2026, which explains why Nintendo kept going.

The new game fixes the biggest complaint about its predecessor: there is far more to do alone. A mode called Island Crown lets you climb the rankings in nine sports against computer opponents until you face each sport's champion, and Tennis, Volleyball and Basketball can be played there in co-op. Our reading of the reviews is simple: Switch Sports was a demo that grew over time, while Switch Sports Resort feels finished on day one.

What the reviews say

Nintendo Life's Jim Norman scored it 9/10 and called it "Excellent", praising Thumb Wrestling and the variety of control styles, while noting that Boxing tracking sometimes falters. Game Informer's Brian Shea gave it 8/10 and wrote that it is "perhaps the strongest entry in the series", though holding the controller like a paper plane cramped his hand. GameSpot headlined its review "the best entry in the series" but criticised the lack of computer opponents in the Leisure Sports races.

The weak points are consistent across reviews: a few awkward motion inputs, some online niggles, and competitive Leisure Sports that only work with real people.

What it means for players

Price first. The US eShop price is $49.99 and the UK price is £41.99. We could not find an official Saudi riyal price; at the riyal's fixed rate of 3.75 to the dollar, $49.99 is roughly SAR 187 before any local margins. US retailers such as Target sell the physical box for $59.99, according to TechRadar.

Second, budget for extras. Nintendo warns that more accessories may be needed for multiplayer, and Nintendo Life says each extra Skateboarding player needs their own Joy-Con 2. There is no local multiplayer in Tabletop mode, so plan on a TV. Online modes, including the ranked Pro League that starts every player at rank E, Bowling matches with up to 16 people and Golf for up to eight, require Nintendo Switch Online. Leisure Sports can only be played online with friends through a Friend Lobby.

Third, language. Nintendo's UK page lists 13 languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian and Thai, but not Arabic. Menus are simple and the motions are intuitive, so this matters less than in a story game, but younger Arabic-speaking players may need help with tutorials for Volleyball and Basketball.

Reaction and what's next

For families and groups, the reviews make this an easy pick, and the 10.3 GB download is modest. Solo players get more than before thanks to Island Crown, but anyone wanting long single-player depth should look elsewhere. Points called Spocco Points, earned in every mode, unlock outfits in a shop that changes weekly and monthly, which gives Nintendo a way to keep people coming back. Nintendo's own veterans are also in the headlines this month; for one example, read what the Super Smash Bros creator said about AI. We found no announcement of post-launch sports in Nintendo's materials, so whether Football or Chambara return in an update, as Golf and Basketball did for Switch Sports, is the next thing to watch.

How we checked this

We counted posts mentioning "Switch Sports Resort" with X's post-count tool on 26 October 2026 (Riyadh time). Game details, prices, file size, ratings and languages come from Nintendo's official US store and UK game pages and Nintendo's own news post. Review scores and opinions come from the original reviews at Nintendo Life, Game Informer, GameSpot, TechRadar and The Verge, and the Metascore from Metacritic. Series history and sales figures come from Wikipedia's articles, which cite Nintendo's financial data. The SAR figure is our own conversion, not an official price.

FAQ

Is Switch Sports Resort on the original Switch?

No. It is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, and several sports rely on Joy-Con 2 features such as mouse mode.

How many sports are in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?

Twelve: Tennis, Table Tennis, Golf, Boxing, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball, Archery, Thumb Wrestling, Prop Plane, Skateboarding and Power Cruising.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?

Only for online play. Single-player modes such as Island Crown and local multiplayer on one TV work without a membership.

Does it support Arabic?

No. Nintendo lists 13 languages and Arabic is not one of them.

Is it better than Nintendo Switch Sports?

Most critics think so. It launched with twice as many sports, a real single-player mode and Wuhu Island, and it scores far higher in reviews.
