Lorem Ipsum Generator
Generate placeholder text by paragraphs, sentences, words or list items. Classic Latin, football-flavoured Kickoff Ipsum or Tech Ipsum, as text, HTML or Markdown.
Your files never leave your device
Placeholder text lets you judge a layout before anyone has written the real copy. Designers use it to try out font sizes and line lengths. Developers use it to see what a card does with a very long title, or whether a page breaks when a paragraph wraps onto five lines instead of two.
Pick classic Latin if you want something nobody will read by mistake. Pick a themed one when a sports or tech mock-up should feel closer to the real thing. Then set exactly how much you want and copy it out.
One habit I'd recommend: before you publish, search the page for "lorem". Filler left on a live page always looks unfinished.

This free Lorem Ipsum Generator fills empty boxes with classic Latin, or with Kickoff Ipsum and Tech Ipsum, two flavours we wrote ourselves for when the filler should match the design.
Your files never leave your device. It runs entirely in your browser. No uploads, no account, and no tracking inside the tool.
How to generate placeholder text
- Pick a flavour. Classic Latin, Kickoff Ipsum for sports designs, or Tech Ipsum for app and SaaS mock-ups.
- Choose what and how many. Paragraphs, sentences, words or list items, anywhere from 1 to 100.
- Pick a format. Plain text for design tools, HTML with <p> or <ul> tags for web pages, Markdown for docs.
- Copy or download. Copy it, or download it as a file. Don't like it? Shuffle gives you a new mix.
What you can generate
A short history of Lorem Ipsum
The familiar opening, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”, is a mangled passage from Cicero’s philosophical work De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The original line begins “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet...”, roughly “Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain...”. Somewhere along the way, a typesetter cut the words apart, which is why “lorem” is really the end of “dolorem”.
It spread through printers' type specimens and then, in the 1980s and 1990s, into desktop publishing software. That's how it ended up as everyone's default filler. It works because it looks like a real language, short words and long ones mixed up, but you can't actually read it, so nobody gets distracted from the layout.
When to use which flavour
- Classic Latin is what everyone recognises as filler. Good for client presentations.
- Kickoff Ipsum is for sports blogs, fantasy league apps and club sites, so your screenshots look on-theme.
- Tech Ipsum fits landing pages and dashboards, where the jargon is close to what the real copy will say anyway.
Plain text, HTML or Markdown?
Pasting into Figma, Canva, Photoshop or Word? Use plain text. Paragraphs get a blank line between them and list items start with a bullet. If you're building a template or filling a CMS field that takes markup, use HTML, which wraps each paragraph in its own tag. Markdown is for GitHub READMEs and note apps. The words don't change when you switch format, only the wrapping.
Good practice with placeholder text
Filler is for testing, so test with it properly. Try a short version and a long one, because real headlines are never as tidy as lorem ipsum. And yes, search for “lorem” one last time before you go live. Search engines get nothing from it either.
Checking a design against a strict limit, such as a 155-character meta description or a 280-character post? Generate the exact number of words you need here, then fine-tune the length with our Word Counter. Need a QR code on the same mock-up? Make one with the QR Code Generator.
Frequently asked questions
What is Lorem Ipsum?
Scrambled Latin that designers and publishers use as filler, so you can judge a layout without reading the words.
Where does Lorem Ipsum come from?
From Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”), written in 45 BC. Somebody chopped and shuffled the words, so it looks like Latin but doesn't mean anything. Typesetters used it for centuries before desktop publishing software made it standard.
Is it free to use commercially?
Yes. The generated text is free to use in any project, personal or commercial, with no attribution needed.
What is Kickoff Ipsum?
Our own football filler, made from words like stoppage time, nutmeg and clean sheet. Handy when classic Latin looks wrong on a match-day design.
Can I get an exact number of words?
Yes. Choose Words and type the number you need. The word count under the result confirms the total, which helps when you test a design against a real character or word limit.
Why use placeholder text instead of real copy?
Because early on, nobody has written the real copy yet. Filler shows you how the design copes with different lengths in the meantime.
Does the HTML output include styles?
No. It contains only clean <p>, <ul> and <li> tags so it takes on the styles of the page you paste it into.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. JavaScript makes the text right in your browser, so it keeps working even if your Wi-Fi drops after the page loads.
